Abstract

The present work was aimed at evaluating the operation of a municipal wastewater treatment plant located in Lublin Voivodeship, operating on the basis of mechanical-biological methods. The analyzed facility is used exclusively for the treatment of domestic wastewater that is carried by a sewage system. The facility includes a catchment point, refreshment chamber, pumping station, biological treatment lines with activated sludge (nitrification zone) chamber with denitrification zone and secondary settling tanks. Treated wastewater is discharged into the nearby river, while sewage sludge is dewatered in mechanical press and drying beds. The study was carried out during years 2021–2024 and the analysis focused on physical and chemical composition of raw and treated wastewater. The values of the following indicators were determined: BOD5, COD, total suspended solids, wastewater temperature and pH. The comparison of the composition of raw and treated wastewater showed that the average efficiency of pollutants removal was quite high and ranged from 94 to 98 %. During the study period, there were no cases of exceeding the maximum permissible concentrations of the tested pollutants in the treated wastewater discharged to the environment, which indicates that the operation of the wastewater treatment plant can be evaluated positively. Nevertheless, given the plans to expand the sewerage network in the study area, it is most likely that in the future it will be necessary to modernize and expand the treatment plant. This will make it possible to sustain, or even increase, the efficiency of wastewater disposal in the study area.
