AI in multiscale environment management on the example of the FaST platform concept

Abstract

FaST (Farm Sustainability Tool) is a digital services platform addressed to farmers, supported by the European Union, on which there are or will be opportunities and restrictions in the field of agriculture, environmental protection and administrative regulations in a given area, from the level of a single farm, through administrative units of member countries, ending with EU institutions. According to the European Commission, the FaST digital service platform aims to provide EU farmers with a new tool to support agricultural-impacted environment and sustainable development in the future. In line with the concept of the FasT tool, the platform will support pro-ecological environmental management strategies through the use of artificial intelligence-based solutions for image recognition, as well as use public sector data and user-generated information. Another aspect of the FaST tool is the use of AI techniques to synthesize solutions in conditions of lack of data integrity, imperfections or lack of data itself in the fields of individual, administrative or remote-sensing data. This study shows the spectrum of the use of artificial intelligence in decision making regarding environmental management on the example of planned and implemented functionalities of the FasT tool, at the same time indicating a wide spectrum of AI use in the future. Multifaceted analysis of available FaST-connected information, in particular reports on the progress of work on the FaST tool and expertises commissioned by the European Commission, allowed the indication of the planned functionalities of the FaST platform and the identification of those using AI techniques, as well as the indication of likely directions of their development in the field of multiscale environmental management.
