Abstract

Societal challenges are priority challenges by the humanity, that when targeted for research and innovation investments, they have a real plausible impact for the benefits of persons. 7 societal challenges for mid-long-term scenarios have been identified by the EU, including: Health, demographic change and wellbeing; Secure, clean and efficient energy; and Smart, green and integrated transport; among others. All these societal challenges have many dimensions and require understanding of their complexity to provide solutions. Transdisciplinary research gives the ability to solve these problems by involving scientists, engineers and non-scientists to work for common objectives. This means that several different disciplines might be involved as well as the stakeholders to find realistic solutions for solving problems. Transdisciplinarity has emerged in the last 20 years as a high-level strategy to solve complex problems.
