Abstract
Elicitation often identified as biostimulation is a relatively well-known method of inducing plant metabolism that activates systemic resistance mechanisms. Elicitors induce controlled stress in plants and induce antioxidant enzyme activity and accumulation of secondary metabolites. Mechanisms of increasing resistance to stress conditions in plants are mainly associated with the production of reactive oxygen species, “sealing” of cell structures or synthesis of proteins and peptides associated with resistance including many defense enzymes. In this study, the effects of elicitors on phenolic and antioxidant properties of fully mature winter wheat grain were analyzed. Among the elicitors used, potassium iodide and UV-C radiation significantly reduced some plant growth parameters. The use of elicitors did not significantly affect the phenolic content, but clearly increased the antiradical activity by about 28% for cricket powder and hydrogen peroxide. With the application of L-phenylalanine, the extracted grain was characterized by the highest values of chelating and reducing power. The uses of L-phenylalanine, hydrogen peroxide, and micronized crickets most clearly illustrated the potential for enhancing the value of wheat grain. Potassium iodide and UV-C radiation have significantly reduced grain yield, so their use as elicitors is quite risky. The results obtained are important for global food production because increasing the value of the grain consumed will improve human health by reducing the incidence of lifestyle diseases associated with poor nutrition.
