Abstract
Chitosan is an extremely versatile material derived from chitin – the building block of marine crustacean shells. The result is a biodegradable polymer widely used in medicine, veterinary medicine, cosmetics and environmental protection. The chemical structure of chitosan is similar to hyaluronic acid. Thanks to this structure, it inhibits the development of microorganisms and accelerates wound healing, which is the result of stimulation of the immune system cells. Preparations with chitosan create on the skin a delicate protective layer protecting against harmful external factors and effectively retain water in the skin. Its strong moisturizing properties also make it a popular ingredient in skin care cosmetics. Due to its complete biodegradability and high nitrogen content, it is also used in agriculture as a seed treatment fertilizer and as a biological plant protection agent against fungal infections. Great hopes are also placed on the use of chitosan in the production of ecological products for everyday use. Chitosan has a biopolymer structure, which makes it possible to form three-dimensional shapes. It is already used in the production of drug casings. Different thicknesses of the chitosan layer were tested to investigate the changes in its properties. Ellipsometry and AFM techniques were used to process the results of the obtained samples. Surface images of the applied chitosan film were also taken using AFM microscope. The obtained results were compiled and evaluated in terms of changes in the porosity properties of the film with film thickness. The assumption was made to use the chitosan film as a surface used for coating vegetables and fruits due to its bactericidal and fungicidal properties.
