Abstract

Extrusion-cooking is a thermo-mechanical process that allows the processing of many raw materials, including those from the agro-food industry. The idea of using by-products of the agro-food industry is gaining importance due to minimizing their negative impact on the environment. As a result, full value products can be obtained and by-products can be management, which is compatible with the idea of sustainable development. Flaxseed also known as linseed, which pulp has a relatively high protein content of about 20-30% and dietary fiber of 20%, so it has a high processing potential. The aim of this study was to management flaxseed pomace, to obtain high process efficiency and low energy consumption using a TS-45 single-screw extruder with a plasticizing system configuration of L/D=16, screw speed of 60, 80 and 100 rpm and temperature in the range of 55-83˚C. As a result, food pellets were obtained. It had specific quality characteristics depending on the process parameters and the amount of pomace added to the mixture. During the extrusion-cooking process no problems with material flowing through the extruder cylinder were observed. The highest efficiency (37 kg*h-1) was obtained at 100 rpm and 10% flaxseed pomace addition. The lowest efficiency (20 kg*h-1) was obtained at 60 rpm and 10% additive. The lowest energy consumption (0.017 kWh/kg) was observed for 100 rpm amd 10% additive and the highest (0.029 kWh/kg) for 60 rpm and 30% additive.
