Drug-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius isolated from red fox (Vulpes vulpes)

Abstract

Staphylococcus bacteria are an important group of microorganisms responsible for numerous infections in animals and humans. Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a commensal bacterium of the skin and mucous membranes commonly found in companion and wild animals, including foxes. Drug-resistant strains of S. pseudintermedius have also become a serious problem in recent years. The objective of the study was determination of occurrence and molecular identification of coagulase-positive S. pseudintermedius in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) as well as evaluation of their antimicrobial resistance. The material for the study were swabs. Samples were taken from such parts of the animals as the mouth and anus. The research was carried out on 415 samples comprising 209 mouth samples and 206 anus samples. Standard selective-differentiation media dedicated to Staphylococcus spp. (e.g. Mannitol Salt Agar and Baird Parker) were used for bacteria isolation i, then identification of strains were carried out by multiplex-PCR. Drug resistance was assessed by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. A total of 156 strains of Staphylococcus spp. have been isolated, of which 60 are anus and 97 mouth isolates included 131 coagulase-positive Staphylococcus strains, which accounted for 83.4%. S. pseudintermedius accounted for 104 isolates (66.7%), including 57 mouth isolates (54.8%) and 47 anus isolates (45.2%).The isolated strains were resistant to seven out of thirteen antimicrobials tested. The strains showed the highest resistance to tetracycline, ( 66%), in addition, 9% of strains were resistant to oxacillin and penicillin, 5% to erythromycin and sulphamethoxazole/ trimethoprim , and to gentamicin and linezolid 4% and 2%, respectively, while the all strains were susceptible to rifampicin, quinupristin/ dalfopristin, clindamicin, nitrofurantoin, ciprofloxacin and chloramphenicol. In conclusion, the red fox can be a reservoir of Staphylococcus such as S. pseudintermedius. The problem of drug resistance concerns not only companion animals, but also applies to wild animals.
