Abstract

One of the consequences of poor storage of fodder is its contamination with mold fungi, which may result in exposing the animal’s body to toxic metabolites of mold, i.e. mycotoxins. One such metabolite are fumonisins, produced by the molds from the Fusarium spp. In this study, we attempted to demonstrate the effect of fumonisins on postnatal skeletal development in the rat, when exposed to them prenatally. To determine the effect of fumonisins, a three-point bending test was performed and morphological bone measurements. The problem of contamination with fumonisins may have not only health but also economic importance, leading to unsatisfactory results in animal husbandry.
