Forecasting energy yield from photovoltaic installations

Abstract

Renewable energy sources are still gaining in popularity, especially due to the depletion of fossil fuel resources, as well as due to the tightening of EU directives defining the share of RES in the total energy balance of member states. Increasing the share of renewable energy sources makes it possible to reduce the impact of human activity on the natural environment, and above all to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. However, currently there is no method on the market to assess the impact of atmospheric factors on the amount of energy that can be obtained from a specific type of PV installation, which will be easy to install and operate, and at the same time cheap. This work presents an introduction to the development of a method for forecasting energy yield from photovoltaic systems, which is possible to use in existing installations. The scope of the research included the analysis of energy yields and meteorological data, such as insolation, wind speed and humidity, obtained from a 1 MW photovoltaic farm located in Włodawa. The analysis consisted in detailing the impact of each of these external factors acting both individually and simultaneously. It was noticed, among other things, that with the increase in humidity, the energy yield decreases, on average by 9.9%. The performed tests showed that it is possible to estimate the impact of atmospheric factors on the energy yield in photovoltaic installations. The method using the energy model of the installation, regardless of whether it is a newly designed installation or an existing one, will contribute to the optimal estimation of the amount of energy that can be obtained from this type of system.
