Nature-based solutions (NBS): knowledge gapsand future research

Abstract

Nature-based solutions (NBS) according to the new agreed definitionformulated by resolution of the Fifth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5, 2022) are‘actions to protect, conserve, restore, sustainably use and manage natural or modified terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems, which address social, economic and environmental challenges effectively and adaptively, while simultaneously providing human well-being, ecosystem services and resilience and biodiversity benefits.’ Such broad understanding on NBS implies the need to verify the state of the knowledge on theimplementation needs and obstacles, operational aspects and effectiveness of these types of solutions. Therefore, this paper aims to identify such knowledge gaps and indicate the directions of the future research that have to be taken to support the implementation and dissemination of the NBS in planning, strengthening the practical application and contributing to the realization of sustainable communities. Knowledge gaps identification was performed based on the literature search (January-February 2023). As a result, there were identified 30 general knowledge gaps types. Among them special concern should be given to: cost-benefit assessment; effectiveness at different time scales and of different solutions’ types; impacts on health and well-being; lacks of the monitoring tools; synergies and trade-offs identification; impact on the social cohesion and environmental justice; NBS interactions at the landscape scale; the impact on biodiversity and ecosystem services; effective stakeholder engagement; adaptive planning and policy frameworks. Results showed that priority of the future research should be given to interdisciplinary approaches that enable to capture the synergies and trades-offs between social, economic and management pillars of NBS.
