Analysis of ioinated-contrast-media in hospital with using of HPLC-MS methods

Abstract

Continuous growth in the global population and life expectancy has contributed to the fact that increasing quantities of pharmaceuticals are consumed every year. The use of diagnostics based on modern imaging techniques is increasingly common. In diagnostic imaging, the most commonly used substances are iodinated contrast media (ICM). These are compounds with a benzene ring structure with attached iodine atoms. Iodine is responsible for the increased absorption of X-rays, causing an enhanced brightness of the elements obtained in the image containing contrast materials. ICMs have been widely used since the 1950s, and their production has been widely controlled. Nevertheless, the process of synthesizing these compounds is the subject of continuous research, with the aim of making it more efficient and environmentally friendly. Annually, more than 75 million examinations are performed worldwide using iodinated contrast media, resulting in high concentrations and significant bioaccumulation of ICMs. For this reason, these compounds have become new environmental pollutants. Hospital wastewater constitutes the main source of ICM emissions into the environment. The presented study shows the ICM concentrations in hospital wastewater of Lublin and Lublin Province.
