Filter for removing phosphorus from biologically treated wastewater – flow conditions

Abstract

Phosphorus present in insufficiently treated sewage adversely affects the condition of receivers, generating algae blooms and deteriorating water quality. This element is one of the nutrients, quite restrictively limited in sewage discharged into the environment. Removal of phosphorus compounds from wastewater is most often done in a conventional way, biologically or chemically. Despite this, the problem of excess phosphorus in discharged sewage is still common, especially in the case of small sewage treatment plants scattered throughout Poland. For such treatment plants, unconventional methods of removing phosphorus from wastewater have been used, consisting in the sorption of nutrients on appropriately selected sorbents. Research conducted so far in many research centers has shown high efficiency of sorption of phosphorus compounds on carbonate-silicate-calcareous rock under the trade name Rockfos®. This work presents the flow conditions of a model for the removal of phosphorus compounds by its sorption on Rockfos® rock. Tests conducted on a laboratory scale will show what are the conditions of liquid flow through the filter material with a directed meander flow. In addition, they allow to determine the design parameters of the filtration chamber, which can be used in full-length sewage treatment plants. The conducted research also answers the question of how the type of filter material affects the difference in the amount of pressure losses. It has been shown that the arrangement of partitions forcing a meander flow makes it possible to extend the filtration path, use the bed filling to a greater extent than without partitions, and, consequently, increase the efficiency of phosphorus removal.
