Abstract
The core objective of the European Green Deal is to improve human well-being by transforming the EU into a modern, resource-efficient, and competitive economy through ambitious initiatives to address climate change and environmental degradation. Innovating with nature yields opportunity to address the major societal challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss, concomitantly yielding economic benefits, and fostering social justice and social equity to achieve more sustainable and resilient societies. The equal emphasis of nature-based solutions (NBS) on social, economic, and environmental co-benefits is fundamental to their significance within Europe’s policy landscape and makes NBS integral to achieving the goals of the European Green Deal. Despite the recognized need for local action to tackle climate change, bottom-up initiatives are frequently regarded as missing or disconnected from the wider policy landscape. Local innovations emerging from NBS actions empower local communities to develop a common vision and co-create locally adapted solutions that deliver a wide range of co-benefits. By enabling local innovation, NBS inherently support Europe’s just green transition by providing a means for the translation of EU ambitions into local action and the achievement of multi-level policy objectives.
