Abstract
The field pea (Pisum sativum L.) is an important legume species used in food, feed and industrial production. Its high nutritional value, especially its high protein content, makes it an extremely valuable ingredient in the production of animal feed. To ensure stable yields and crop quality, it is necessary to monitor many factors affecting plant development. The studies were conducted between 2019 and 2022 at experimental stations belonging to the Research Centre for Cultivar Testing (COBORU) located in Tarnów, Skołoszów, Węgrzce, Pawłowice, Krzyżewo, and Przecław. The experiments were laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Eight varieties of field pea were tested for stability, including Astronaute, Batuta, Grot, Kazek, Mandaryn, Mefisti, Nemo, and Tarchalska, and only results for varieties tested for at least two years were used. Yield, thousand grain weight (TGW), and percentage of weed cover (PWC) data were studied. The Eberhart and Russell model (ER)was used to assess stability of the studied traits. Because, PWC has a non-normal distribution, the values of PWC were transformed using the logit transform prior to the analysis. The analysis of statistical data revealed that the Kazek genotype is the most stable in terms of yield, while the Astronaute, Grot, and Kazek genotypes are the most stable in different environmental conditions. The Mefisto and Tarchalska genotypes were characterized the lowest stability. The Mandarin genotype was the best in terms of thousand seed weight stability, and the Mephisto genotype was worst. The analysis of genotype sensitivity to environmental variability did not reveal significant differences among the tested genotypes. This study provides valuable information about the stability of field pea varieties in different environmental conditions in Poland. The results suggests that Kazek genotype was the most stability for yield, while Mandaryn was the most stability for thousand seed weight. The study highlights the importance of considering environmental factors when selecting field pea varieties for cultivation.
Thank you to Marcin Przystalski for performing the statistical calculations.
