Effect of salicylic acid on maize growth in chromium presence

Abstract

The study aimed to examine the effect of seed priming with salicylic acid (SA) on maize seedlings (Zea mays L.), Kosmo 230 variety, grown in the presence of chromium (Cr). In seven-day-old maize seedlings, growing in hydroponic cultures, the plant growth parameters were measured (fresh and dry weight of their aerial parts and roots, their length); the content of macroelements (N, P, K, Mg, Ca) and microelements (Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe) were determined and the content of ascorbic acid and photosynthetic pigments (chlorophylls, carotenoids). Chromium significantly inhibited plant growth and biomass production, which was particularly evident in the root reaction. Accumulation of Cr in shoots increased slightly, compared to the control plants. Chromium decreased the nitrogen content in maize shoots and roots, and the content of other macroelements (P, K, Mg, Ca) also decreased in the aerial parts of plants. In leaves, Cr significantly increased the level ascorbic acid and carotenoids, while lowered the content of ascorbic acid in the roots. Priming the seeds with salicylic acid partially protected the seedlings against the toxic effects of chromium. Salicylic acid stimulated the growth of the aerial parts of the plant and increased the levels of magnesium, calcium, iron and carotenoids. These results suggest that seed priming with salicylic acid can be used as a potential growth regulator and stabilizer of cell homeostasis when the plant is exposed to the presence of chromium in the medium.
