Problems of mixing and aeration in activated sludge bioreactors

Abstract

One of the most important sources of EU law regulating the conditions for the treatment of sewage from biogenic compounds is Directive 91/271/EEC. European Union Member States were obliged to implement the regulations arising from its provisions. This has necessitated the modernisation of existing municipal wastewater treatment plants and the use of modern energy-efficient technologies based on biological methods. A binding target for the entire wastewater sector is not only to improve the quality of water discharged to receiving bodies but also to establish energy neutrality. This means that municipal wastewater treatment plants should aim to significantly reduce their energy consumption and obtain energy from renewable sources. One variant of wastewater treatment technology based on the biological method, in which activated sludge is adapted and used, is the sequencing batch reactor, where successive cycles of several to several hours take place sequentially in a single tank. An important element of the above solution is the use of mixing and aeration systems that ensure a high degree of homogenisation of activated sludge and wastewater in the volume of the bioreactor with the lowest energy intensity of the process associated with the demand for electrical energy of the systems driving the mixers and aeration blowers. Taking into account the analysis of the state of the art, hydrodynamic and design parameters of the mixers used, a system for mixing wastewater and supernatant water in SBR bioreactors was developed as a slowly rotating helix-shaped ribbon mixer. Preliminary laboratory tests have shown that the designed stirrer performs particularly well in reactors with a cylindrical shape and a high value of the height-to-diameter ratio.
