The use of electronic pressure sensors to control the correctness of the rider’s seat

Abstract

The rider’s seat is considered the most important equestrian aid, and its effective influence allows full control of the horse and full use of its physical and mental capabilities [Pruchniewicz 2007]. It has been proven many times that seat errors and loss of balance of the rider adversely affect the horse’s back, which in turn leads to spine pain, disturbances in the functioning of the thoracic and pelvic limbs, loss of rhythm during movement and mental discomfort [Swift 2005, Peham et al. 2010]. The research included 10 horses aged 5–10 years, of various breeds and sexes (1 stallion, 5 geldings and 4 mares). The experiment involved measuring the flexibility of the rider’s seat based on the change in pressure on micromechanical, semiconductor electronic sensors of my own design, which were placed between the saddle and the horse’s back. The results are presented in the form of graphs with pressure changes expressed in kilopascals (kPa). It turned out that any disturbance in the rider’s balance causes a change in the load on the horse’s back, which leads to changes in pressure in the sensors. This allows you to practically correct the rider’s seat and control its correctness.
