Abstract
Agricultural production inevitably leads to the generation of waste during the production process. These are not a deliberate product of the process, but a by-product of its implementation. The increase in waste generated by agriculture necessitates the development of effective methods of managing this waste, which can make a significant contribution to reducing the negative impact of food production on the environment. Much of what remains from agricultural crops is valuable material, even though it is currently treated as waste. Transforming them into new raw materials for energy production is an important step towards a sustainable future. Hazelnut production and processing produces different types of waste biomass, i.e. shoots, leaves, seed coat and woody shells that need to be properly managed. Among the many uses of this plant, the possibility of using the residues from its cultivation as an energy source is an important one. This paper presents the possibilities for the energetic management of selected types of waste biomass from hazelnut production. Preliminary field tests were conducted under temperate climate conditions on a private horticultural farm. Analyses were carried out for four hazelnut varieties viz: Webba, Katalonki, Olbrzymi from Halle and Olga in the year 2023. The aim of this review paper was to provide comprehensive information on research on the possibilities of managing waste biomass from hazelnut production and their potential use for energy purposes.
