Effects of operation of a hybrid constructed wetland wastewater treatment plant in the Polesie National Park (Poland) during the start-up period

Abstract

The study presents the results of research on the operational efficiency of a hybrid constructed wetland wastewater treatment plant in the first year of operation. The tested facility was put into operation in September 2022 and is used to treat 0.4 m3/d of wastewater outflowing from a forester’s lodge located in the Poleski National Park (PPN) in Poland. The treatment plant consists of: a 2-chamber primary settling tank integrated with a pumping station and a system of two VF-HF type beds (with vertical and horizontal flow) with common reed and willow. During the research period (from October 2022 to December 2023), 14 series of analyzes were performed and 56 sewage samples were collected, in which selected physicochemical and microbiological indicators were analyzed. Based on the obtained test results, the effects of pollutant removal were determined, and the composition of treated sewage was compared to the current requirements in force in Poland for this type of facilities. It was found that the average effectiveness of reducing total suspended solids, BOD5 and COD, as well as Escherichia coli bacteria and fecal enterococci was over 90%. Slightly smaller effects were achieved in the case of nitrogen and total phosphorus removal (60–80%). It was shown that the composition of treated sewage already during the start-up period of the facility met the requirements contained in the legal act currently in force in Poland. The conducted research has shown that hybrid hydrophyte systems of the VF-HF type can be recommended for use in protected areas for wastewater treatment and protection of water against eutrophication.
