Abstract
Nature-based solutions (NBS) have the positive impact on ecological values by enhancing natural capital, promoting biodiversity, mitigating water runoff and contributing to climate change adaptations and carbon sequestration. Therefore, they are widely applied in urban areas which face a set of societal challenges. The aim of the research was to analysed the impact of the spatial and temporal characteristics of different types of NBS on mitigation to two major urban challenges: climate resilience, green space management and biodiversity enhancement. Two urban areas were analysed: Istanbul province, Turkey (5,455 km2, 39 districts) and Lublin city, Poland (147 km2, 27 districts) which considerably differ in terms of climate conditions, vegetation types, social structure and spatial development policy. In the first stage of the study, 13 major NBS types of polygon character characteristic for both Istanbul and Lublin were detected using GIS software and local spatial data. Istanbul province is terms of NBS is mostly cover by forest ecosystems, farming lands and urban reservoirs, wherein Lublin is dominated by the mosaics of urban parks, gardens and street trees. Then, 30 indicators reflecting inter alia air and soil temperature, land cover forms configuration and composition, and biodiversity richness were calculated in relation to two levels: landscape (entire urban area) and patch (given NBS type). The results showed considerably differences among analysed cities especially in terms of connectivity of blue and green areas, their state of anthropogenic transformation and temperature factors. Therefore, finally the impacts on analysed solutions were analysed in relation to four major factor groups: ecological, climate, socio-cultural and economical management. It was revealed, that climate and socio-cultural conditions are of the predominant role in terms of shaping the spatial and temporal characteristics of NBS in analysed urban area.
