Preliminary results of phosphorus sorption studies of selected minerals for a modular filtration chamber

Abstract

A modular filtration chamber with adjustable variable mineral inserts and fixed mechanical and biological inserts demonstrates high water purification efficiency under diverse water quality conditions in natural swimming pools. Establishing the scientific basis for the operation of a systemic filtration chamber based on a modified mineral filter and fixed filters: mechanical and biological, for highly effective water treatment under varied water quality parameters in natural swimming ponds. Development of technology and technical specifications, and implementation of an innovative, high-efficiency, modular, and easily modifiable water filtration system for natural swimming ponds. Model studies on the adsorptive efficiency of phosphorus by combined mineral filtration inserts under variable flow and water quality conditions. The adsorptive efficiency against phosphorus at its low concentration in water (0.002–0.008 mgP/dm3), supplemented by an analysis of the possibility of desorption of chemical substances from deposits into the effluent water – tap water with tested physicochemical parameters was used. Adsorptive efficiency against phosphorus at a high level of phosphorus content in raw water (2 mgP/dm3) potentially achievable in natural swimming ponds – a prepared laboratory solution was used. Adsorptive efficiency against phosphorus at a very high concentration of phosphorus compounds (5g P/dm3) usually unattainable under natural conditions of pond use, considering mechanical disturbance of the bed – a prepared laboratory solution and a mechanical machine with rotating containers of known rotation parameters were used. All sorption materials showed sorption potential against phosphorus at its minimal concentrations. The highest sorption capacity was demonstrated by the filter with modified marl (sorption efficiency series for P: modified marl 73.4% → iron gravel 61.7% → limestone 6.7%). The studied minerals showed minimal desorption of various tested parameters and/or change in their values, however, without exceeding the FLL norms for natural swimming ponds. All sorption materials showed sorption potential against phosphorus at its higher concentrations. The highest sorption capacity was demonstrated by the filter with modified marl (sorption efficiency series for P: modified marl 99.65% → iron gravel 60% → limestone 23.5%). The studied minerals showed minimal desorption of various tested parameters and/or change in their values.
