Abstract
The premise of modern agriculture, sustainable and precision agriculture is to minimize the expenses incurred in agricultural production, protect the environment, conserve natural and human resources and stabilize yields. The use of the genetic yield-forming potential of plants and the achievement of stable yields with good quality parameters depends, among other things, on balanced fertilization, the purpose of which is to provide plants with macro- and micro-nutrients in the right proportions and quantities to achieve maximum yields of the desired consumption or processing quality. Analyzing weather conditions, we are witnessing various weather anomalies, such as long-lasting droughts, intense storms (rains and winds), sudden temperature fluctuations and frosts, among others. Under such conditions and inappropriate soil reaction, the uptake of nutrients by the plant root system is hindered, inter alia due to the formation of unabsorbable forms of nutrients in the soil, or is too slow (for example, in the tillering and intensive growth phases). Therefore, in order to ensure that the growth rate of plants does not slow down, or that there are no nutrient deficiencies, it is recommended to apply macro- and micronutrients extra-rootally. Currently, there are many foliar fertilizers available on the market that contain micronutrients in various chemical forms, characterized by varying bioavailability to plants and the degree of utilization, biodegradability and concentration of the micronutrient. Foliar fertilizers prevent plant diseases and increase the uptake of nutrients from the soil. This paper analyzes the characteristics of commonly used EDTA chelates and innovative amino acid chelates in terms of basic physicochemical properties and their impact on the natural environment.
