Abstract
Pregnancy is a time when a woman’s body goes through many changes in preparation for the development and growth of the child. Diet plays an important role in this process, because the mother’s way of feeding affects the health and subsequent eating habits of the child. For this reason, a woman should take care of her diet throughout pregnancy, as well as in period preceding it. Non-compliance with dietary recommendations is associated with many adverse consequences, including fetal growth restriction, body deformity, overweight or underweight, miscarriage, and mental retardation. In addition, there is also a possible long-term development of diseases and disorders such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, coronary artery disease, insulin resistance and fertility disorders. The aim of the study was to assess the diet and knowledge of pregnant women about nutritional programming. A questionnaire was prepared to check the knowledge of nutritional recommendations and information on the formation of the child’s metabolism under the influence of nutrients consumed by the mother. It has been shown that a significant proportion of pregnant women did not have sufficient knowledge about nutritional programming and its effects on fetal development. Some of the respondents did not follow the recommendations regarding the supplementation of minerals and vitamins during pregnancy. Moreover, most of the respondents were aware of the harmful effects of ethanol and nicotine consumption on the child’s development and avoided the use of these stimulants during pregnancy. In conclusion, women of reproductive age should be educated in the field of nutritional programming and the first 1,000 days of a child’s life, so that they are conscious that the diet before and during pregnancy has an impact on the development of the child.
