Abstract
The vegan diet has been gaining popularity in recent years, however It can be rather problematic to balance this diet properly, and avoid food shortages. Therefore, nutrition education and awareness among people on a vegan diet is extremely significant. The purpose of the study was to determine the nutritional awareness of people on a vegan diet. By an questionnaire, it was checked whether the respondents had adequate knowledge, corresponding to the recommendations essential for the proper composition of the plant-based diet. Their knowledge was checked, among others on the sources of potentially deficient ingredients on this diet like iron, calcium, selenium ect. The results show that the respondents mostly have adequate knowledge about plant sources of valuable nutrients, and they were aware of the necessity for supplementation of vitamin B12 and vitamin D3. The obtained results allow to conclude that the respondents mostly have a quite high nutritional awareness and knowledge about proper way to balance the plant-based diet and provide themselves with potentially deficient nutrients. However there were issues that turned out to be problematic for the respondents, for instance question about iron bioavailability. This proves the necessity of proper nutritional education for this group.
