Abstract
The rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria poses a serious threat to global health. Existing antibiotics are becoming increasingly ineffective, necessitating the development of novel therapeutic strategies. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are naturally occurring molecules produced by organisms as part of their innate immune system. They exhibit a broad spectrum of activity against a wide range of pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. This unique property makes AMPs promising candidates for combating infectious diseases, particularly those caused by MDR pathogens. AMPs employ diverse mechanisms to combat microbes. Some directly disrupt microbial membranes, while others stimulate the immune system or inhibit microbial growth. This multi-pronged approach makes it difficult for pathogens to develop resistance. However, challenges remain in translating the therapeutic potential of AMPs into clinical applications. These challenges include limitations in their stability, potential for cytotoxicity, and efficient delivery methods. Current research is actively addressing these limitations. Chemical modifications and novel delivery systems are being explored to improve the stability and efficacy of AMPs. Additionally, AMPs show promise in applications beyond direct antimicrobial action. They hold potential for promoting wound healing, modulating the immune response, and even combating cancer. AMPs represent a new generation of antimicrobials with immense potential to address the growing threat of MDR pathogens. Their broad-spectrum activity and diverse mechanisms of action offer significant advantages over conventional antibiotics. While challenges remain in optimizing their clinical use, ongoing research is paving the way for their successful application in various therapeutic areas. This poster highlights the promise of AMPs in revolutionizing the fight against infectious diseases and explores their potential for broader therapeutic applications.
