The evaluation of energy from raspberry shoots used as biomass depending on the variety

Abstract
This study investigated the impact of variety on the growth parameters of Rubus idaeus L. and the energy value of biomass obtained from their shoots. Six primocane raspberry varieties from Polish breeding programs were evaluated: Polana, Polesie, Delniwa, Poemat, Polonez, and Poranek, analyzing, among others, length, diameter, and mass of shoots, as well as the number of dormant buds and branches. Energy and emission parameters were assessed by conducting a technical evaluation, elemental analysis, and examining the emission coefficients of annual shoots cut in winter. The highest average length and mass of a single shoot were found in the Polonez variety, while the lowest were in the Poranek variety. The Polana variety had the highest average ratio of the fruiting part length to the total length of the shoot, while Polesie had the lowest. The Polonez variety was characterized by the longest canes, while the Poranek variety had the shortest. The highest values of LHV (Lower Heating Value) and HHV (Higher Heating Value) were observed in the Poranek variety, and the lowest in the Delniwa variety. The results indicated the highest percentage of carbon content in the Polonez and Poranek varieties, and the lowest in the Polana variety. The highest carbon dioxide content in combustion products was demonstrated in the case of the Polonez and Poranek varieties, and the lowest for the Polana variety. The variety had a significant impact on both growth parameters and energy and emission parameters. The obtained results indicate the possibility of using raspberry canes as a source of biomass for energy purposes.
