Assessing the impact of progressive changes in the hemiboreal climate on the cultivation of cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata) in Central and Eastern Europe

Abstract
Cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata) is one of the paramount olericultural plants grown in Central and Eastern Europe. Its specific site requirements make it a crop predisposed to open cultivation in relatively humid climates with moderate average annual temperatures. The progressive climate warming and the noticeable reduction of water resources in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as increasingly frequent meteorological anomalies have shown the far-reaching consequences in shaping the production capacity of agri- and horticultural lands. It is known that climate change results in continuing convertions in specific agricultural and horticultural production systems, but the details of these changes are often difficult to predict. Therefore, it becomes important to conduct research and estimate the possible effects of ongoing climate change in the aspects of environmental and economic cultivation interactions. The main goal of this study was an attempt to identify the variability of climatic factors that shape the production capacity of Dfb climate areas in Europe for the cultivation of cabbage. The work includes a multi-parameter analysis of long-term data on rainfall and temperature measured in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as a review of literature data on modeling and prediction of the effects of selected changes in environmental parameters on horticultural and agricultural production. Multifaceted assessment of the observed climate changes in the hemiboreal zones along with the predicted scenarios of their further development made it possible to identify factors limiting the production of cabbage in Central and Eastern Europe, such as: increase in both air and soil temperatures (mostly in the warmest months of the year), variability of precipitation, resulting in drought stresses and plant bolting. These analyzes also made it possible to indicate the economic justification of activities that could counteract the observed phenomena.
